Michael Weldon of SixPrizes.com has published an excellent article on the Pokemon TCG aimed at beginners. Not ony does he talk at length about the history of the game, he offers valuable advice on deckbuilding that even experienced players can use. He goes into great detail into both the cards that are popular in today's (and yesterday's) decks and why they are popular (deployment aids, "surprise" cards, late-game recovery).
